New survey spotlights Brazilian football finance
Brazilian accounting firm Casual Auditores Independentes has carried out a survey of the finances of top
Brazilian football clubs using data from the financial years 2004 and 2003. It found that the combined turnover of the nineteen clubs surveyed was US$311m in 2004 compared with US$216m the year before. The most significant revenue sources were player trading (treated as a profit and loss item in UK club accounts),broadcast and sponsorship income. In 2004 of the 14 clubs that published player trading figures this item accounted for a total of US$72m, but Cruzeiro-MG, Atletico-MG,Vasco da Gama-RJ, Gremio-RS and Guarani-SP did not publish player trading figures. In some clubs this item can account for up to 65% of turnover. Carlos Aragaki, a partner at Casual, believes that Brazilian clubs must improve income from revenue diversification projects, but at present Brazilian clubs find it difficult to gain revenue from gate receipts, the most traditional source of football income.
